Bedford apartments offer housing for low-income seniors
A new apartment complex for low-income seniors in the city of Bedford is seeking residents.
Joseph’s Dream Apartments — a cluster of 11 single-story buildings off Roundtree Drive near U.S. 460 — offers 50 handicap-accessible units.
The housing is subsidized, meaning the government pays 70 percent of rent for eligible seniors age 62 or older based on income, said Michael Morings, director of operations for Dynamic Property Management, a North Carolina company that manages the complex.
“This particular project is an independent living facility,” Morings said. “It’s safe, decent and affordable.”
The Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2007 awarded about $5 million to Metropolitan Housing and CDC Inc. for the project. The nonprofit, based in Washington, N.C., has developed housing projects in Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina.
The Bedford apartments are named after a son of the Rev. David Moore, the nonprofit’s president, Morings said. They each include a bedroom, a kitchen, a dining room and private entrances, he said.
“We have a few tenants there now,” Morings said, but applicants are being sought for the majority of the units.
The complex also features a community room where residents could enjoy bingo, entertainment and activities. A manager is on site from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays, Morings said.
Construction started last year and was completed earlier this summer.
The 12-acre development is in a suitable spot with low impact on schools and utilities and the Peaks of Otter nearby, said Jimmy English, the city’s building official.
“The views are really great,” English said. “It’s a good project.”
